Damien Dempsey Visits Scoil Cholmcille for Multi-cultural Week 2024

Written by Misia and Riley (4th Class)

Last Thursday Damien Dempsey came to our school. We asked him to come to our school to help us celebrate Multi-cultural Week. The whole entire school spent the week learning songs to sing for Damo such as I'll Tell Me Ma, Beidh Aonach Amárach, and the Rare Ould Times. Damo's visit also gave our class the idea to start a 'Songs and Stories' project. The whole school was asked to get stories from parents, grandparents, etc. A few pupils from each class had their stories picked and put in a book. We gifted a copy of the book to Damo.

First, Damo came to Ms.Brennan's class. We sang some songs for Damo such as Alanna (as Gaeilge) and Rattlin Bog. Two other musicians came, one with a tin whistle and a djembe (Alan) and one with a guitar (Seán Mulrooney, who is a past pupil of our school!) Damo sang his song 'Bustin Outta Here' for us.
Then, we went to the hall where the rest of the school was waiting. More than 200 of us sang our songs for Damo and he sang the Rare Ould Times and the Rocky Road to Dublin for us! Overall, it was superrrr fun!

Fun facts about Damien Dempsey:
1. Damo is from Donaghmede
2. Phil Lynott inspired Damo to start music.
3. His favourite song is 'Rocky Road to Dublin'.
4. He said he kinda just gets ideas for songs like a river flows through him.
