Engineer Visit in 4th Class
2nd Dec 2024
Fourth class have been working really hard on their STEPS: Engineers Ireland projects. Groups brainstormed, designed and created their very own prototypes. The aim of their devices was to improve the lives of people in their community. We were very lucky to welcome Arantxa Martinez who works as a civil engineer into our classroom. She spoke to us about her job and then watched the group's presentations about their prototypes. Each group stood in front of the class and used the Google Slides they had created to explain their ideas and methods to Arantxa. She was so impressed with the imagination and effort that went into our projects. She also asked us to engineer structures using marshmallows and toothpicks and test to see if they would survive an 'earthquake' in the classroom.
Our groups ideas are below. Take a look!
1 Electric ramp to adapt stairs for wheelchair users
2 White Noise Stress Blanket (for regulation and anxiety)
3 The Granny Grappler Bag (wearable airbag for older people)
4 The Re-Cycler (Human Powered Ocean Rubbish Collector)
5 ‘Boredom’ (An interactive board game to reduce screen time use for young people)
